Dr. Philip Tidyman was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1776 to Hester Rose and Philip Tidyman. He studied at the University of Edinburgh and Göttingen, where he was the first American to receive a doctorate at a German university. In 1801, he returned to Charleston where he was a physician and a planter.
